How to tell your engine needs looking at

  The check engine light is onIt could be the emissions system, low oil, a sensor, or something serious. The light itself will not tell you which. Pulling the code and testing from there is the only way to know.

  Strange noises or new vibrationKnocking, ticking, or a rattle that was not there last month usually means a worn part, an oil problem, or a belt on its way out. Cheap to catch early, expensive to ignore.

  Losing power or struggling to accelerateIf it hesitates going up a hill or feels flat off the line, something in the fuel, ignition, or air side has changed. Worth checking before you get stranded.

  Fuel economy dropped offA sudden change in what you are spending at the pump is one of the earliest warnings of an engine problem, and one of the easiest to dismiss.

  Smoke or a smell you do not recogniseBlue, white, or black smoke each point somewhere different. So does a burning or sweet smell. Do not keep driving it.
